HC asks DGP to ‘personally’ review rape probe, depute sr officer for task
Directing 24×7 police protection for an alleged gangrape survivor, Bombay HC directed the state director general of police (DGP) to “personally peruse” the investigation record and transfer the probe to a senior officer. The officer cannot hand over the probe to a subordinate and must also investigate the role of the investigating officer (IO) in Solapur, the bench of Justices A S Gadkari and P D Naik said on December 16. Police filed the chargesheet against only one of the accused for the lesser offences, accepting the alibi of the second man. “We have come across at least three such ca ses in last three weeks wherein the statement of the prosecutrix has been totally disbelieved in grave and serious offence under Section 376 (rape) ofIndian Penal Code (IPC) by not following the la w enunciated by the Supreme Court in its catena of decisions,” the bench said, a dding that it was the second such case within a week where “police did not adhere to basic princi ples of investigation”.
Zero Covishield doses in stock, state seeks 10L shots from Centre
Anticipating growth in demand for Covid booster shots amid an ongoing wave in China, the state government has demanded 10lakh Covishield shots from the Centre. However, the state has n’t received any indication on how soon the doses might arrive. In fact, there are concerns that it could be a while before the doses arrive since the Centre has not hinted towards procurem ent recently. While the public health department has 17lakh doses of Covaxin, it has zero Covishield doses in stock. The demand for Covishield is maximum as the majority have got immunised with this vaccine, which people also prefer for the third shot despite mixing and matching being allowed by the Centre. Many private hospitals have also placed demand for small batches of Covishield after bei ng flooded with calls enquiring about the availability of booster shots in the past week.
The coronavirus figures in Maharashtra are as follows: Positive cases 81,36,511; fresh cases 32; death toll 1,48,414; recoveries 79,87,948; active cases 148; total tests 8,58,61,429.

The recovery rate in the state is 98.17 per cent, while the fatality rate stands at 1.82 per cent

There are now 148 active cases in Maharashtra, of which Mumbai and Pune account for 50 and 42 cases respectively

The Mumbai circle recorded the highest 12 cases, followed by Pune with 11, Nagpur five and Akola four. Latur, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Nashik circles did not report any case.

The number of sample testing conducted during the day increased by more than 9,000 as compared to Saturday. A total of 19,049 tests were carried out, which took the overall test count to 8,58,61,429.

The death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,414 as nobody succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, while the cumulative recovery figure reached 79,87,948 after 20 patients recuperated.
