Mumbai News Highlights: EC allots ‘two swords and a shield’ poll symbol to Shinde faction of Sena – The Indian Express

Mumbai News Highlights, Shiv Sena Party Symbol: The Election Commission has allotted ‘two swords and a shield’ poll symbol to the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had given the Election Commission a fresh list of poll symbols – peepal tree, sword and sun – on Tuesday. The Shinde-led faction had listed the trishul, rising sun and gada (mace) as poll symbol choices, two of which were not allotted owing to religious connotations.
The Election Commission allotted the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and flaming torch symbol to the Shiv Sena faction led by former CM Uddhav Thackeray. A day after the Election Commission (EC) of India froze Shiv Sena’s name and bow and arrow poll symbol, party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday slammed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Sena faction along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while terming the poll panel’s order as an “injustice” towards him and the party. In a virtual address to the Sena cadre and people of Maharashtra, Uddhav called the Shinde faction a 40-headed Ravana who took away Lord Rama’s “bow and arrow”, which was also dear to late Sena founder Bal Thackeray.
In other news, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested five people linked to fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s ‘D’ company in connection with an extortion case, a police official said. The police’s anti-extortion cell (AEC) had recently arrested gangster Chhota Shakeel’s brother in law Salim Qureshi alias Salim Fruit and businessman Riyaz Bhati in an extortion case and charged them under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). During further probe into the case, the role of five more people — Ajay Ganda, Feroz Chamda, Sameer Khan, Papa Pathan and Amjad Redkar — came to light and hence they were nabbed.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde welcomed the Election Commission’s decision to grant his faction the ‘two swords and a shield’ symbol, saying it was associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and also the old Shiv Sena. Their first choice was `the sun’, Shinde said.
“Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena is the Shiv Sena of the common man. We accept this decision of the EC. We had given priority to the ‘sun’ symbol, but it approved two swords and shield. This is the symbol of the old Shiv Sena and a Maharashtrian symbol. It is the symbol of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his soldiers,” he added.
Two swords and a shield was one of the symbols the Shiv Sena, founded by Bal Thackeray, used in the 1967-68 civic polls in Mumbai and elsewhere.
